This pairing brings together two beloved local favourites: the silky softness of soya bean pudding and the warm, crispy crunch of you tiao. Long enjoyed in hawker centres and traditional breakfast shops, the combination of soy-based desserts with fried dough is a nostalgic Singaporean treat — simple, comforting, and endlessly satisfying.
The delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture of the pudding balances beautifully with the crispness of freshly reheated you tiao. Each bite offers a gentle sweetness, a light soy fragrance, and a contrast of textures that makes this pairing both refreshing and indulgent. Perfect as a dessert, teatime snack, or a modern café-style twist on a familiar classic.

Optional toppings: Gula melaka syrup, Grass jelly, Soya bean milk drizzle
1. Make the soya bean pudding Warm the soya bean milk in a pot over low heat — do not boil.
Stir in sugar until dissolved.
Add gelatine or agar powder and whisk gently until fully incorporated.
Chill in the fridge for 1–2 hours until set and jiggly.
2. Prepare the you tiao Reheat the you tiao just before serving:
Air fryer: 180°C for 3–4 minutes
Oven: 180°C for 5–7 minutes
Pan-toast: until warm and crispy
Slice into bite-sized sticks.
3. Serve Place the chilled soya bean pudding on the table, optionally topped with gula melaka syrup or a drizzle of fresh soya milk.
Add the warm, crispy you tiao on the side.
Dip the you tiao lightly into the pudding, scoop both in the same spoonful, or enjoy them alternately — the combination of cold, silky pudding with warm, crunchy dough is the highlight of this classic pairing.
